Our History

Irving, Carlson & Xavier LLP is a law firm with an impressive and respected history spanning more than 40 years. Throughout its existence, ICX has remained committed to the original mission of excellence in practicing law, responsiveness to clients, and the provision of public service upon which the Firm was established.

The Firm’s beginnings date back to the 1970s when Nicholas Irving opened his solo law office in downtown Manhattan. The son of a Dutchess County farmer, he had practiced as both an in-house counsel and a member of a larger firm before following his entrepreneurial instincts. While he was teaching a securities law seminar, he met Samuel Carlson, a student at Columbia Law School. Upon graduating in 1978, Carlson joined Irving in practice formed a partnership of Irving and Carlson.

Since the beginning, Irving and Carlson focused on representing corporations and corporate litigation. They maintained a course of gradual growth while continuing to concentrate in corporate work. Then in 1985, associate Landon Xavier was made a full partner and the firm officially became Irving, Carlson & Xavier LLP.

In 1992, ICX opened a Boston office, followed by a Philadelphia office in 1999.  The biggest move came in 2002, when ICX merged with a 20-lawyer New York City firm called Pratt, Chase & Mason, which boasted a remarkably similar value system combined with first-rate practices in corporate, white collar, and other fields. 2002 literally and figuratively involved opening new doors. The firm expanded its intellectual property practice with the addition of approximately 20 lawyers who joined us in New York and New Jersey and helped us start new offices in the Hudson Valley and Princeton.
